
A quarter of pregnant women suffer from mental health problems, a study by King's College London suggests. The BBC reports that the study of 545 pregnant women found that anxiety affected 15 per cent of those surveyed, with depression found in 11 per cent, eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (two per cent each), post-traumatic stress disorder (just under one per cent) and less commonly, bipolar disorder and other disorders.
A couple who took Vietnamese girls from care and forced them to work in nail bars for free have been found guilty of child slavery charges. The Sun reports that 29-year-old Viet Hoang Nguyen, known as Ken, and his 23-year-old wife Giang Huong Tran, known as Susan, were caught following a UK-wide police investigation. A third member of the gang, Thu Huong Nguyen, 48, known as Jenny, was also found guilty of forced labour charges. The girls were discovered after police raided Nail Bar Deluxe in Bath, Somerset, in February 2016.
Children under the age of 16 are to be banned from being able to purchase high-caffeine energy drinks at Waitrose. The Daily Mail reports that, following warnings from teachers that the drinks fuel disruptive behaviour and risk-taking, the supermarket will impose its own ban across the UK from March, with any customer who appears to be younger than 16 being asked to provide proof of age when purchasing the energy drinks.
A boy has been stabbed to death in Oxford. The BBC reports that the victim, believed to be aged 16 and from the Birmingham area, was found near a children's playground in Friars Wharf, at about 7.55pm on Wednesday. He was taken to hospital but died there as a result of his injuries, police said.
A two-year-old who was accused of sex offences is among an increasing number of under-10s reported for committing "crimes" in Cambridgeshire. The Cambridge News reports that the number of under-10s reported to police has increased from 53 in 2013, to 205 in 2017. This included a two-year-old who was reported to police for "familial sexual offences", while a 10-year-old and an eight-year-old were accused of assaulting a police officer.
Two people have been arrested on suspicion of neglect over the death of a baby girl on New Year's Day. The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that police were called to an address in Pildacre Lane in Chickenley, near Dewsbury in Yorkshire, at just before 6am on Monday to a report of an unwell child. The baby was rushed to hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after. A 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of neglect over the child's death.
