Daily roundup: Gove ‘demotion', child abuse, and maternity services

Teachers' dislike of Gove behind "demotion"; National Crime Agency announces arrests of 600 suspected paedophiles; and guidelines published on mental health care for expectant mothers, all in the news today.

The Guardian reports that former Education Secretary Michael Gove was demoted because he had become a “toxic liability” among teachers. The paper said the decision was made amid warnings from the Tory's general election campaign director, Lynton Crosby, following private polling.

More than 600 suspected paedophiles have been arrested as part of a six-month operation targeting people accessing child abuse images online. The BBC reports that the National Crime Agency estimates it has protected 400 children as a result. It said the 660 arrested included doctors, teachers, scout leaders, care workers and former police officers.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published a draft guideline on antenatal and postnatal mental health. Recommendations include ensuring there is a specialist perinatal mental health midwife in each maternity service provider, and establishing more mother and baby units to care for mothers with mental health difficulties.
