Daily roundup: Criminal families, advice on praising children, and sex education

Judge wants babies removed from persistent offenders; warning on praising children, and funding secured for lessons aimed at children at risk of sexual exploitation, all in the news today.

Children should be removed from criminal families at birth to end “cycles” of offending, a judge has said. The Yorkshire Post reports that retiring judge Alan Goldsack wants action taken to stop families producing “the next generation of criminals”. “A frightening thing is the number of people I see who are the grandchildren of the people I have prosecuted and defended 40 years ago, because crime runs in families in the same way that being a doctor, teacher or lawyer does,” he said.

Parents should avoid calling their children beautiful because it sends them the wrong message that looks are the most important thing in life, a senior Liberal Democrat MP has warned. The Telegraph reports that women’s minister Jo Swinson wants parents to give praise when children complete jigsaw puzzles or show curiosity in asking questions.

A sex education programme targeted specifically at children at risk of sexual exploitation is to launch after funding was secured from Comic Relief. The National Children's Bureau and the Sex Education Forum will run Lessons in Love – which will be developed based on the experiences of young people and the knowledge of experts in the field. The project is calling for evidence on effective sex and relationship interventions for vulnerable young people.
