Daily roundup: Children's homes, Birmingham DCS and school places

Education committee launches inquiry into children's residential care, Birmingham's DCS leaves the council, and the government announces which schools will receive funding for new places, all in the news today.

The Education Select Committee has launched an inquiry into proposed government reforms of residential children’s homes. The inquiry will look at whether the Department for Education’s proposed reforms to the regulation of residential children’s homes are appropriate and sufficient, and if they are likely to prove effective. Written submissions should be made by noon on 23 September.

Birmingham City Council’s head of children’s services has left his role with immediate effect. A statement issued by the local authority said the decicion was made “by mutual agreement”. Birmingham’s director for adults and communities, Peter Hay, has taken over the role on an interim basis. Duxbury joined the authority in April 2012 and was tasked with turning around its failing children’s services, which have been rated inadequate for four years in a row.
