
Water, food and fuel bills could be cut for low-income families as part of the government's new child poverty strategy. The Observer reports that the government is anxious to be seen to do more to improve the living standards of the worst off. The draft strategy is expected to be published later this week.
A letter signed by 30 early years experts and academics calls on the government and local authorities to reverse cuts to children's centres and council-funded nursery provision. The letter, published in the Guardian and signed by Helen Moylett, president of the British Association of Early Childhood Education and Bernadette Duffy, head of Thomas Coram Centre for Children and Families among others, said the "irresponsible" cuts would harm the most vulnerable families. Unless reversed the cuts would have long-term consequences for the life chances of children and young people, it added.
