
Increasing numbers of children are being adopted, according to government statistics. Figures released today show that 3,450 children were adopted during the year ending 31 March 2012. This represents the highest figure since 2007 and an increase of 12 per cent on 2011. Meanwhile, total numbers of looked-after-children rose by two per cent to 67,050. Edward Timpson, minister for children and families, welcomed the rise in adoptions, but added said it takes too long for those who want to adopt and foster to be approved. "The time it takes for a child in care to be adopted can be a significant period in that child’s life," he said.
