Prince Harry visits youth centres; government unveils age-verification plans for online pornography; and nurseries tell children with eye infections to stay at home, all in the news today.

Prince Harry visited Wigan Youth Zone and learned about charity OnSide's approach to offering young people facilities and encouraging them to get involved. Wigan Today reports that Prince Harry also met with OnSide's founder and deputy chairman to discuss how the charity plans to expand across the UK to reach young people most in need.


The government will present the Digital Economy Bill in parliament today, which plans to introduce age verification for entry to pornography websites. The Register reports that the move is part of efforts to protect children from online porn.


Nurseries are "forcing" children to take antibiotics by telling those with minor eye infections including conjunctivitis to stay at home. The Daily Mail reports that almost nine out of 10 nurseries ask children with the infection to stay at home, with half refusing to take children back until they have taken antibiotics, according to research from the sickness policies of 164 nursery schools in England Scotland and Wales.


A teachers' strike over pay and budget cuts left an estimated 7,000 schools fully or partially closed yesterday. The Guardian reports that around 11 per cent of state schools closed, while 20 per cent were partially open but with fewer members of staff than usual.


There have been 13 instances of catchment fraud in secondary schools, and 11 at primary schools, in Edinburgh this year. The Express reports that the families - who lied about where they lived to get their children into a certain school - were caught by the city council's fraud team.
