1 min read
Government announces funding to tackle domestic abuse; more than 200 children identified as "prolific knife carriers" in London; and the Vatican offers to care for terminally ill baby Charlie Gard, all in the news today.

The Home Office has announced £17m of funding to be shared among more than 40 projects to help prevent violence against women and girls. Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the money will go towards supporting victims, working with perpetrators of abuse to change their behaviour, and helping to support children affected by what they have witnessed.

More than 200 children, including some as young as 13, have been identified by the Met Police as prolific knife carriers. The Evening Standard reports that New Scotland Yard figures show that 203 juveniles and 555 adults have been suspects in knife crimes on at least two occasions over the past year.

The Vatican's children's hospital has offered to take over care of terminally ill Charlie Gard. The BBC reports that the president of the Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome, Mariella Enoc, said she had asked Great Ormond Street Hospital if 10-month-old Charlie could be transferred. Great Ormond Street has said Charlie cannot be moved for legal reasons.

Accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has chosen UK Youth as one of two charities it will support over the next two year. The firm said it plans to raise money through organised fundraising events, employees volunteering their time and staff donating money via payroll.

Buckinghamshire County Council has announced plans to build four new children's homes. The Bucks Free Press reports that the local authority will invest £2m into 20 new residential placements in the county, which will include two children's homes in Aylesbury, one in Buckingham and one in High Wycombe.
