Daily roundup 4 November: Sex crimes, asylum seekers, and Rotherham

1 min read
Tens of thousands of sex crimes going unreported; increase in children seeking asylum in Europe; and Rotherham Council criticised after a children's home inspection finds failings, all in the news today.

Tens of thousands of sex crimes against 16- and 17-year-olds are going unreported, research by The Children's Society has found. The Guardian reports that although 50,000 girls claimed to have been a victim, only around 4,900 sex crimes were reported.

Around 700 children are seeking asylum in Europe each day, twice as many as last year, research by Unicef has found. The Independent reports that between January and September this year, more than 190,000 children sought asylum in Europe, compared to 98,000 over the same period last year.

A solicitor representing victims of child sexual exploitation has criticised Rotherham Council for failing to keep children safe after Ofsted rated a children’s home in the town "inadequate". The Yorkshire Post reports Woodview children's home has closed after the inspection found that children were potentially at risk of exploitation.

Councils should give young people leaving care the same support as they would give to their own children, the Children's Commissioner for Wales has said. The BBC reports that Sally Holland said it does not make sense to provide care for young people but let them down at the final stage of the care system.

A purpose built £2.4m youth centre in Devon has been saved from closure. The Herald Express reports that Devon County Council announced it would stop paying the upkeep for Red Rock Youth Centre in Dawlish earlier this year. But now it will continue paying for running costs by incorporating a Newton Abbott-based educational support service at the centre.
