Daily roundup 4 December: Part-time jobs, free childcare, and Universal Credit

1 min read
Fall in number of children with part-time jobs; children's minister reveals more than 3,000 foster children will not benefit from 30 hours' free childcare; and Scottish children's commissioner considers legal action over universal credit, all in the news today.

The number of schoolchildren with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years, figures have shown. The BBC reports that the findings come from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to all local authorities across the UK responsible for issuing child employment permits. In 2016 a total of 23,071 permits were issued, compared with 28,759 in 2013.

More than 3,000 foster children will not benefit from the 30 hours free childcare initiative, the government has revealed. The Mirror reports that children's minister Robert Goodwill said that foster children are only eligible for the 15 hours a week available whether parents are in work or not. He said some 3,030 children are affected.

Scotland's children's commissioner has said he may consider legal action over the introduction of the government's controversial universal credit welfare system if it further disadvantages young people. The BBC reports that Bruce Adamson said poverty was the biggest human rights issue facing children in Scotland. He said that the reforms to the benefits systems could result in some children going without basics like a warm home and hot meals.
