
Labour has vowed to continue to press the government to do more to support child refugees after MPs voted not to take on an additional 3,000 unaccompanied children. The Guardian reports that shadow immigration minister Kier Starmer said the fight will go on to force the UK to do more to help some of the thousands of unaccompanied child refugees in Europe.?
Police are hunting two masked men who fired shots at a building where social workers are based in Manchester. The Manchester Evening News reports that police said a number of shots were fired at the building, which houses both children and adults social workers, and it was also daubed with graffiti slogans.
Parents across the country are to protest against the introduction of new SATs tests and plans to force all schools to become academies. The Birmingham Mail reports the protest, which is due to take place on 3 May, is part of a campaign launched by Let Our Kids Be Kids.
Health minister Jane Ellison has rejected calls for the government to extend its meningitis B vaccination programme to older children. The Telegraph reports that MPs debated an extension of the age range after an e-petition calling for all children to be given it on the NHS received more than 820,000 signatures.
Employers in West Sussex are being reminded of the harmful consequences a job could have on a child. The Mid Sussex Times reports that the West Sussex County Council says its campaign is not about prosecuting employers, but about educating them on the impact work can have on a child's education, and the penalties of not following regulations on child labour.
More than 100 apprenticeships are being offered to young people in Glasgow. The Evening Times reports that apprenticeships are being offered across the city in trades including housing, care, carpentry and joinery, plumbing, electrics, painting and decorating, and plastering.
