Calls for 16- and 17-year-olds to be allowed to vote in June's general election; Ofsted announces new set of multi-agency inspections; and report recommends healthier school meals in Scotland, all in the news today.

Prime Minister Theresa May is facing cross-party calls to extend the vote to 16- and 17-year-olds in June's general election. The Independent reports that Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas said May should make an "urgent change" in the law to allow them to have a say in "their future".

Ofsted said a series of six joint targeted area inspections (JTAIs) involving Ofsted, Care Quality Commission (CQC), HMI Constabulary and HMI Probation will begin in May this year.

School meals should include fewer puddings and more fresh vegetables, according to a report. The BBC reports that Obesity Action Scotland said improvements to school meals could play an important part in reducing childhood obesity.

A consultation period has launched into the future of a children's centre in Darlington. The Northern Echo reports that Darlington Borough Council plans to close one of its five centres as part of efforts to make savings totalling £1.4m.
