Daily roundup 19 January: Radicalisation, Rolls Royces, and mental health

1 min read
A website to advise teachers on radicalisation is announced; council splashes out on luxury cars despite cuts to children's services; and a commission to improve mental health care provision for children launches, all in the news today.

A new website has been launched to advise parents and teachers who are concerned about their children being radicalised. The Guardian reports that Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said the website, called Educate Against Hate, will provide advice drawn up by government and charities including the NSPCC.

A council has spent £90,000 to hire a Rolls Royce for official use despite proposing cuts to children's services. The Mirror reports that Westminster Council is set to axe nearly 50 play workers and support staff as part of the plans for £320,000 in reductions to budgets in youth and play services, and children's centres.

A commission that aims to improve mental healthcare provision for children and young people has been launched by YoungMinds, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition. Chaired by Baroness Claire Tyler, it will focus on what matters to those that rely on child and adolescent mental health services.

Youth charity Impetus-PEF has announced a new chief executive. Andrew Ratcliffe has previously worked as senior policy adviser for education for the Prime Minister's strategy unit, where he worked on policy for social mobility, parenting and skills.

Young people in the Sea Cadets will get the opportunity to gain a nationally accredited qualification in teamwork, personal skills and citizenship to help boost their skills for employment. The Edexcel BTEC Level 1 certificate is the result of a partnership with UK-based educational charity CVQO, and will be available to cadets aged 13 and older.
