Oxfordshire County Council pledges to soften the impact of proposed children's centre cuts; children with mental health problems face longer waiting times for emergency treatment; and study identifies British children as amongst the laziest in the world, all in the news today.

Oxfordshire County Council has pledged to reduce planned cuts to children's centres by £2m. The BBC reports that the council has agreed to reduce the level of savings from £8m to £6m as a result of strong opposition to the move. The council had proposed closing all 44 centres and replacing them with eight new facilities. It has now said it will keep childcare services at 11 of the existing centres.

The number of children with mental health problems having to wait in accident and emergency departments for longer than the government's target of four hours has trebled in the past five years. The Huffington Post reports that 2,197 children under the age of 18 waited longer than four hours in 2014/15, compared with 769 in 2010/11.
