Child abuse inquiry could take eight years; not enough progress in Suffolk schools finds Ofsted; and MP raises concerns over children's services failures in Cumbria, all in the news today.

The inquiry into historical child abuse by establishment figures could take twice as long as originally thought, it has been claimed. The Daily Mail reports that a recording has emerged of a senior Home Office official at a meeting with survivors saying the inquiry could “go on for eight years”.


Suffolk County Council has been too slow in its action to help schools in the area improve, Ofsted has found. Inspectors found too few pupils in the county attend a "good" or "outstanding" school, particularly in Lowestoft and Ipswich, which have the highest level of deprivation in the area.


The MP for Carlisle has criticised the standard of children's services at Cumbria County Council after Ofsted rated it "inadequate" last week. Conservative John Stevenson told the Cumbria Crack that the council's performance was "clearly not good enough". He has requested a meeting with council officials to discuss how to improve services.
