Police and crime commissioner advocates apology policy for stop and searches; London has the highest number of women and girls affected by FGM; and children under 12 put on anti-extremism programme, all in the news today.

Police officers should apologise in person to those they have unreasonably stopped and searched, the Northamptonshire police and crime commissioner has said. The Times reports Adam Simmonds said all forces in England and Wales should adopt the apology policy, with a panel of senior officers and members of the public judging if a stop and search was reasonable or not.


The highest number of women and girls affected by female genital mutilation are living in London, a study has found. The Guardian reports a study by City University London and Equality Now found 21 women per 1,000 were affected by FGM in the capital, with the 10 highest prevalence rates located in London local authorities.


More than 100 young people under the age of 18 have been referred to the government’s anti-extremism programme in the North East. The Chronicle Live reports figures from the National Police Chiefs’ Council showing that 120 under-18s have been referred to the service including eight children under the age of 12.


Findings from a special commission set up to look into abuse within the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland are due to be published. The BBC reports the investigation was led by Dr Andrew McLellan and took evidence from victims in a bid to improve support services and protection.


At least 12 allegations of historic child abuse against former Prime Minister Edward Heath are being investigated by detectives. The Express reports alleged victims have come forward since police named Heath as a suspected abuser two weeks ago.


Online music videos are to receive age ratings in the same way as films to "protect children from viewing inappropriate videos on the internet". The BBC reports the decision comes following a government pilot scheme of 132 videos.
