
More than 40,000 children who qualify for free school lunches were forced to skip a meal during their school summer holidays this year, a study has found. The charity which carried out the research, StreetGames, has launched a new initiative, Fit and Fed, in order to tackle the problem. Holiday activity sessions will be run in poor neighbourhoods, with a nutritious meal every day, free of charge.
Parents have been told they will be fined £1 for every minute they are late picking up their children from school. The Sun reports that Oasis Academy Limeside in Oldham has issued a warning telling parents they will be charged for leaving staff waiting around at pick-up time. Academy chiefs said the letter was sent out to express "how seriously" they take punctuality.
Social media site Instagram has apologised after an image of a young child with a facial deformity was removed from its site. The Evening Standard reports that Harry Beswick, 12, was born with Goldenhar syndrome, which means he has no left eye, eye socket, nostril or left ear. His mother, Charlie Beswick, who runs a blog and Instagram account for parenting a special needs child, said the social media site decided the picture breached guidelines and was removed.
A man who killed his unborn daughter by kicking his girlfriend in the stomach just five days before her due date has been jailed. The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Stuart Samson, 37, attacked his partner Jessy Johnson, 19, during a row in a bar before telling her not to call an ambulance. He was jailed for two years and nine months at Leeds Crown Court after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
National charity OnSide Youth Zones has appointed a relationship development manager to support the growth of its network of youth centres. Jamie Masraff joins the organisation with 10 years' experience, having designed and led transformation and infrastructure projects in the private and public sector, working most recently at Barnet and Sutton councils in London.
