Nicola Sturgeon announces childcare expansion plans; researchers find youngest children in their year more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, and increasing number of young people seeking help over concerns about their body image, all in the news today.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced plans to double spending on childcare by 2020. The BBC reports that the Scottish government has pledged to almost double free provision to 30 hours a week, for three- and four-year-olds and eligible two-year-olds.

The youngest schoolchildren in a year group are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, research has found. The Daily Mail reports that researchers from Nottingham University found that greater immaturity compared with classmates may prompt an ADHD diagnosis.

Increasing numbers of young people are worrying about their body image, according to Childline in Birmingham. The Birmingham Mail reports that staff at the city call centre have seen a rise in the number of children calling in about weight, acne and body image issues. Latest figures reveal staff delivered 311 counselling sessions on body image last year, compared with 275 in 2014/15.

A nursery has been handed the worst rating possible with an Ofsted inspector saying it "places children at significant risk of harm". Gloucestershire Live reports that All Nation Nursery, in Conduit Street, Gloucester, was assessed by the education watchdog as "inadequate" in all four categories during a visit in the summer.
