Criminal cash used for youth football

Youth Work
Young football fans in Scotland are set to benefit from cash seized from criminals, the Scottish Government has announced.

It is using £2.2m taken from criminals, as well as a further £2m from the Scottish Football Association, the bank HBOS and the Coalfield Regeneration Trust, to create free football coaching and playing opportunities for more than 30,000 young people.

The move comes under the Scottish Government's Cashback for Communities scheme and will fund projects for three years.

The money will be used to deliver a range of projects, including a national network of five-a-side football and a programme to bring 1,700 new volunteer coaches into the youth game.

Scottish Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill, said: "Scotland's children and young people need to have the opportunity to realise their potential, to have real hopes and aspirations for their future and a clear understanding that getting involved in crime and antisocial behaviour is not acceptable."
