The Home Office has released a consultation document that proposesgiving PCSOs the ability to issue on-the-spot fines to young people whoare truanting and powers to disperse groups of people from publicareas.
A spokeswoman for the Association of Chief Police Officers said: "PCSOshave a unique role within the police service, providing a reassuring andaccessible police presence."
But Roger Howard, chief executive of crime reduction charity CrimeConcern, said: "We must not put all our efforts into enforcement andpunishment as the key response to crime."
The consultation on the PCSOs' powers lasts until 26 October.
