
The Association of Chief Police Officers, which has published its strategy for children and young people, wants to see more Safer Schools Partnerships.
These involve local education authorities and police forces working together to ensure a full time police presence in schools where it is felt to be needed.
The youth strategy places a strong emphasis on the need for preventive work, and early identification of children and young people who are likely to become involved in serious offending.
Proposals include giving local police teams a Neighbourhood Policing Youth Tool Kit that would allow them to take the lead in targeting potential young offenders.
