Crime prevention: Karate scheme set for growth decade

1 min read

The Youth Charter for Sports, Culture and Arts, which has worked in Moss Side, Manchester, for the past 10 years, plans to expand into other deprived communities around the UK.

Headed by five-times world karate champion Geoff Thompson, the charity uses arts and sports activities to divert young people from crime, boost their self-confidence and improve their skills.

The charity plans to open a new project every year, and the young people who get involved will use their skills to help establish the project in the next location for expansion.

The 10-year programme will begin in Hackney, east London, this November, followed by expansion into Leeds, Birming-ham, Bradford, Liverpool and Wolverhampton. The project will also open in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
