Councils get 7bn pound to keep teens training

Education
Local authorities are to receive 7bn pounds to help colleges and sixth forms cope with the education and training leaving age rising from 16 to 18 years old.

The government's Raising Expectations white paper outlines how young people can be kept in education or training beyond 16 through apprenticeships, diplomas, A-levels and GCSEs. It says local authorities must compare demand with the number of places available and make sure young people are fully informed.

Schools minister Jim Knight said: "It means local accountability and local leadership to deliver for young people and offer a range of qualifications."

The plans are being consulted on until 9 June.
