North Somerset's lead member for children's services is among opponents of plans to open a children's home in Portishead, near Bristol.

Councillor Jeremy Blatchford, the executive member for children andyoung people's services at North Somerset Council, has voiced concernsabout the safety of the location of the home in a quiet part of thetown.

He said: "My concern is the children will be so readily identifiablethey will be black marked, blamed for everything and this is not rightfor young people who are very vulnerable.

"The home is also a short distance from a tidal estuary where there isdangerous mud and sand. On planning grounds, it would almost certainlybe refused."

Last week, fellow Conservative councillor David Pasley, who has beenleading a protest group made up of residents from the coastal town, metOfsted officials in an attempt to stop Northerncare's plans.
