Consultation seeks to win more support for lowering voting age citizenship

Votes for 16- and 17-year-olds might only be introduced for local elections under a consultation proposal issued this week.

The Youth Citizenship Commission's (YCC) Old Enough to Make a Mark? consultation was launched this week and explores whether or not 16- and 17-year-olds should be allowed to vote in local and general elections. It asks respondents whether the voting age should be lowered and what measures the government could take to encourage voting if the age were reduced.

One of the consultation proposals suggests lowering the voting age for local elections only. Jonathan Tonge, chairman of the YCC, described the consultation as a "valuable opportunity". "The YCC has been set up with the specific aim of helping all our young people become active citizens, fully connected with society. Lowering the voting age is just one of the areas we are discussing in order to make that target a reality," he said.
