Consultation on Giving Children and Young People a Right to Appeal

The government is looking to strengthen young people's participation in the processes and decisions that affect them, and is seeking views on giving them the right to appeal decisions regarding permanent school exclusions and special educational needs assessments.

It is also consulting on giving young people the right to make disability discrimination claims in England.

The Education and Skills Act 2008 has already given young people aged 16 and over the right to appeal decisions on school admissions and the right to comment on their school's behaviour and discipline policy. This consultation also looks at the support that children and young people may need to appeal, and during the appeals process. It underpins recommendations from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which includes rights for children to express their views on matters that affect them.
