Constitutional reform: Youth parliament to sit in Commons

The UK Youth Parliament could be allowed to meet once a year in the House of Commons under plans announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

In a statement on constitutional reform last week, Brown said the youthparliament should be allowed to meet in Parliament on a day when MPsaren't using the chamber.

England's children's commissioner Al Aynsley-Green said: "I am thrilledto hear Brown has announced that he will invite the UK Youth Parliamentinto the chamber. By welcoming children and young people into the seatof political power and decision-making, we will see a clear sign thatthe Government is serious about listening to and valuing ourchildren."

Fiona Booth, chief executive of democracy charity the Hansard Society,added: "Anything that makes Parliament more accessible to young peopleis a good thing."

Brown also said an inquiry into lowering the voting age from 18 to 16should take place.
