Youth Parliament asks government to respond to voting age issue

Youth Work
The UK Youth Parliament asked the government to respond to the issue of lowering the voting age to 16 as part of an historic debate in the House of Commons last week.

The Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) became the first non-MPs to debate in the Commons chamber on Friday.

They discussed lowering the voting age to 16, making university education free, job opportunities for young people, cheaper transport and youth crime. After a vote on which issue the government should be asked to respond to, 107 of 313 votes were cast for lowering the voting age.

Harry Carter, Sheffield Member of Youth Parliament, wrote a blog entry on the event. He said: "The day was amazing. It showed the level of debate young people could reach."
