Connecting with Kids Through Stories: Using Narratives to Facilitate Attachment in Adopted Children (second edition)

Denise B. Lacher, Todd Nichols, Melissa Nichols and Joanne C. May; Jessica Kingsley Publishers; ISBN 978 1 84905 869 8; £15.99; 240 pages

This book is a discussion and guide on the use of narrative to help children and parents work through difficult behaviour and attachment issues. But it is also much more.

There is also discussion on, among other things: the latest science on the developing brain; the effects of trauma on brain development; the effect of this trauma on behaviour; recognition that ordinary parenting tools may not work in modifying negative behaviours; and the importance of supporting parents and children in their efforts toward attachment and bonding.

As an adoptive parent, I am delighted with any book that states unequivocally the importance of adoptive or foster parents being central to the therapeutic process. Too often professionals are wedded to the notion that parents are the problem. This book’s emphasis on helping parents do the therapeutic work of building the family as a safe healing space is spot on.

The problem with this otherwise potentially useful book is its poor editing. The fact the book has four authors is far too obvious, with many strands repeated. There is so much information here, it really requires a single, strong voice to organise it. Mind you, this does mean you can plunge in anywhere and soon get the gist.
