Conference news: Training - Warning of 'mess' for several years

The man heading up government policy on reform of the children's workforce has admitted that career pathways and plans for new training and qualifications will be a "mess" for some time to come.

Chris Wells, head of the children's workforce unit at the Department for Education and Skills, said it wouldn't be easy to develop a career framework that would allow professionals to move between children's professions with training based around a "common core" of skills.

"Let's not pretend it is going to be simple and straightforward," he told delegates at the Children Now Fund conference.

But he said it was vital to introduce this kind of flexibility to improve recruitment and retention of quality staff.

Earlier he admitted it would take further government investment, above and beyond the 125m Transformation Fund announced in the 10-year childcare strategy, to raise the status and qualifications of the children's workforce.
