Community relations: Bombings force procedures overhaul

Telford & Wrekin Council is overhauling its procedures for dealing with disaffected young people in response to the London bombings.

The council is revising its arrangements following a wave of anti-Muslimsentiment, including attacks on young Muslims thought to have beentriggered by last month's explosions.

Christine Davies, director of children's services at the council, said:"There are some serious implications from recent events. We arereviewing what we're doing in the light of the current difficulties.We're refreshing our ways of engaging young people, particularly thosefrom Black and minority ethnic communities."

Davies also called on other local authorities to take similaraction.

"In relation to the debate that is going on about the disaffection ofyoung Muslims I think local authorities are going to need to look attheir own ways of engaging and involving children and young people andmake sure that they have got in place ways of engaging with Black andminority ethnic communities that go beyond the tokenistic.
