COMMUNITY: Extended schools to receive 52m boost

Extended schools offer a range of community services, such as study support, sports, art, and health and social care, in addition to normal teaching.

By 2006 at least one school in every local education authority will receive funding as part of an initiative to join up services, as outlined in the recent children's green paper. Around 52.2m has been made available for the programme over three years.

At last week's launch of the extended schools scheme, Margaret Hodge, children and young people's minister, said: "After-school activities and clubs at extended schools are great for children and young people and help make better use of school buildings that would otherwise be empty."
