Chris Waterman, executive director of ConfEd, which represents directorsof children's services, spoke out after the Prime Minister announced theGovernment was on track to meet its 2010 target for city academies.
Blair added that the proportion of children getting the equivalent offive good GCSEs had improved at four times the national average.
"It is difficult to see how greater diversity and more academies sitswith the Every Child Matters agenda," said Waterman.
The Government's support for city academies was also rejected by anothersenior education figure, who didn't wish to be named. He said: "Everyacademy is its own admissions authority. Every new admissions authoritydisadvantages the disadvantaged."
