ChildRIGHT: In a Nutshell -- The prevention of child abduction

How the police and the courts can support parents who fear their child has been or is about to be taken out of the UK without their permission.

What is child abduction?

Child abduction is when a person takes or sends a child out of the UK without the permission of those with parental responsibility or permission from the court. If a person has a residence order for a child, they are able to take the child out of the UK for up to 28 days without the consent of others with parental responsibility.

What is the law relating to child abduction?

It is a criminal offence under the Child Abduction Act 1984 for a person connected with a child under the age of 16 to take or send that child out of the UK without the consent of any other person who has parental responsibility for the child.
