Children's voices ignored as Olympic Park takes shape

1 min read Youth Work
CYP Now has uncovered wide-ranging concerns that children and young people will not benefit from the London Olympic Games.

Our investigation reveals that children's views on the £242m aquatics centre, which will form the entrance to the Olympic site, have been ignored. When consulted about the legacy plans, giant slides and a wave machine topped their wish list. But these ideas are impossible to construct because of the shape of the giant, sweeping roof.

"It's this bloody roof that's the problem," said an insider at the London Borough of Newham. "If they could alter the design then we could get built these slides that children want."

There are also fears that children and young people will struggle to get to the Olympic Park after the event. Play England has found barriers to access such as railway tracks.

Paul Durr, acting regional manager at Play England in London, said: "Bridges are being put in place for the games to ensure easy access. But while some are permanent, others are not."
