Children's centres: Plans still daunting despite 947m

1 min read
Local authorities say it will be tough to implement the Government's plan for 2,500 children's centres by 2008, despite nearly 950m in funding.

Councils across England will get 947m for a second wave of "Sure Start children's centres", it was announced last week.

Each authority was informed of its funding allocation for a "recommended" number of children's centres. The sum includes capital and revenue funding.

Some authorities got more than expected. Derby council had been hoping to build three more children's centres on top of the seven it already has, but it got more than 4.9m for a further eight centres.

A spokesman for the Local Government Association welcomed the funding but called for more flexibility to allow local good practice that already exists to flourish.

"The scheme will be a challenging one for councils to implement and we would like to see the revenue funding continue beyond 2008," he added.
