CHILDREN'S BILL NEWS: BAN ON SMACKING - MPs hope to amend Bill

A group of 100 MPs hopes to amend the Children's Bill to include a ban on smacking. The cross-party group, led by Wakefield Labour MP David Hinchliffe (pictured), is backing a campaign by the Children Are Unbeatable! alliance to scrap the legal defence of reasonable chastisement.

Alliance spokesman Sir William Utting said: "The Children's Bill should be used to recognise children's equal right to protection from assault.

In the modern family home, the law must be clear that hitting is wrong regardless of age."
