Children to learn how to stay safe by the sea

Schoolchildren are to go surfing this summer to learn about beach safety skills. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will be teaching eight- to 12-year-olds how to surf, as well as training them to keep safe by the sea.

The course is part of the charity's annual beach safety campaign, which aims to reduce the number of people killed or injured near the coast. By the end of the sessions, children should be able to recognise the red and yellow beach flags, understand the role of a lifeguard and have improved confidence in the water.
