Childcare: Vocational courses gaining popularity

There have been sharp increases in the number of people gaining vocational qualifications in childcare, social care and health, statistics show.

Figures published by the Employers Organisation for local governmentshow the number of people gaining NVQs in those fields increased by aquarter in the 12 months up to December 2005. That means 130,000 morepeople gained qualifications.

The number of people gaining qualifications in managing children's homesshot up in the last quarter.

The figures show newly-developed NVQs in early years education and carehave proved popular. Nearly three quarters of students registering inDecember 2005 opted for the new courses.
