Childcare: Tory plans receive mixed reception

Children's organisations have welcomed a Conservative pledge to make childcare more affordable. But they also warned that a proposal to extend tax breaks to all working mothers will not help the worst off.

Conservative leader David Cameron outlined his plans to simplify theexisting tax credit system in a speech to the National Family andParenting Institute last week. He said all working families should beentitled to tax relief on childcare and should be able to spend thatmoney on any form of care they wanted.

But the Child Poverty Action Group said this would not help the poorestfamilies who pay little or no income tax. The Daycare Trust said it wasdisappointed Cameron had not committed to any future spending onchildcare.
