Childcare: Retention specialists

A stable workforce is vital to good childcare but the sector's turnover remains high. Radhika Holmstrom looks at how some organisations are holding onto their staff.

If you clock up 10 years working at the Exeter-based Puffins nurserygroup, you're taken out to lunch - and not just to a local restaurant;previous destinations have included Italy, Iceland and Marrakech.

While the promise of a glamorous trip won't on its own keep staff in thesame job for a decade, the eight-strong nursery chain has an unusuallygood record in retaining its 170 staff (one of whom has been workingthere since the company was set up 15 years ago).

For instance, 44 out of the 120 staff qualified to NVQ Level 2 and 3receive the annual bonus for employees who have been in post three yearsor more.
