Childcare: Report supports the drive for shared paid parentalleave

1 min read
Parents need to be given the opportunity for more flexible shared paid parental leave to look after their young children, says the Equal Opportunities Commission.

This is the major finding of a survey by the Equal OpportunitiesCommission, Dads and Their Babies: The Mother's Perspective.

The publication of the report coincides with the Government's Work andFamilies Bill, which is due to be unveiled this week.

Researchers surveyed 920 mothers with babies aged between four and 16months for the report, which calls for a radical change in paternityleave.

Currently new fathers get two weeks paternity leave compared with 52weeks for new mothers.

Seventy-seven per cent of mothers felt that their partners would be asconfident as they were in caring for their children and 62 per centrejected the idea that a father's main role was to be thebreadwinner.
