Childcare: Providers hit back at behaviour claims

Early years providers have hit back at fresh claims that time spent in nurseries is linked to bad behaviour.

A Government-commissioned report into nurseries found that while longhours in daycare builds children's confidence, it can cause also worry, anxiety and poor behaviour.

The research, one of several reports into the Neighbourhood NurseriesInitiative, follows a report by a Birkbeck University professor claimingthe longer a child spent in nurseries the more aggressive they are atschool. (Children Now, 4-10 April).

But Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day NurseriesAssociation, said: "This only relates to behaviour difficulties in asmall number of cases. There are many factors that impact on a child'sdevelopment."
