Author Penelope Leach, co-director of the study, said her researchrevealed that most families understand little about the different typesof childcare available.
The research also concluded that children aged up to 18 months faredbetter when cared for by their mothers. Nannies and childminders werethe next best alternative, followed by informal care and then groupdaycare.
However, it found most parents did not think carefully about childcare,making last-minute decisions and assuming friends and relatives weretrustworthy. Few took up childcarers' references or understood theregulations or requirements for different types of care.
