Childcare: Lighter touch will lead to greater risk

Childcare experts have urged caution on Government plans for new "light touch" approval for childcarers as consultation came to a close this week.

In an open letter to children's minister Margaret Hodge, Gill Haynes, chief executive of the National Childminding Organisation, said there could be "significant risks" in the scheme, which would offer voluntary accreditation to nannies and other home-based childcarers. Haynes feared the proposals did not include a mechanism for assessing the quality of childcare.
