The National Day Nurseries Association says all types of childcareproviders should be able to take part in the schemes and wants theGovernment to make this clear. "It is crucial that local authorities arerequired to distribute funds fairly and that the private and voluntarysectors are involved," said association chief executive PurnimaTanuku.
A Department for Education and Skills spokesman said authorities werefree to run the schemes in the way they felt best met the needs of localfamilies.
"This diversity will enable us to test the effectiveness of provision ina range of circumstances, with a range of providers," he said.
