Childcare & Early Years: Lack of facilities hinders parents

1 min read Early Years
Many parents of disabled children want to be able to work or study but have too many difficulties accessing suitable childcare, a report published today (19 September) by the Daycare Trust has revealed.

Parents responding to the charity's Listening to Parents survey also said they were desperate for a break from their caring responsibilities and needed time to spend with their other children.

A shortage of childcare settings offering the specialist care disabled children need, and a lack of information about childcare and available help with costs were two of the main barriers parents faced.

The study, Listening to Parents of Disabled Children about Childcare, sought the views of parents during a series of focus groups.

Parents felt there was a lack of understanding among childcare workers of the complex needs of disabled children, and also spoke of a lack of suitable holiday provision for all disabled children, especially teenagers.
