Portsmouth City Council is one of 15 local authorities taking part inthe Government-funded scheme. It hopes to offer 220 free childcareplaces at local nurseries and already a hand-ful of families have takenup the offer.
The council is targeting disadvantaged children including those livingin temporary accommodation, looked-after children, and children ofteenage parents.
Catherine Kickham, head of early years and childcare, said the councilsaw the trial as a chance to link families in with other relevantsupport.
"We'll have a worker dedicated to this project who will manage or brokerany other support that parent should have," she said. "It will providean added dimension for the mother, father or carer."
