Childcare: Confusion over the role of teachers

1 min read
Tony Blair's pledges last week on school-based childcare have added to confusion over the role of schools and teachers within the reform of children's services, an expert says.

Phil Street, chief executive of education charity ContinYou, said greater clarity was needed on plans to open primary and secondary schools from 8am to 6pm.

He said: "I think there is some confusion in schools about the way this is being spun - whether the Government is talking about the school day getting longer and what is meant by 'childcare'."

Rosemary Murphy, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, said Blair's emphasis on working in partnership with the private and voluntary sector was "promising".

Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, said breakfast and after-school clubs would need to be "recognisably different from school" to avoid alienating young people.
