Child support: Opposition to use of private debt collection firmsgrows

1 min read
Evidence is mounting that the Child Support Agency's use of private debt collectors, as part of a 10-month pilot scheme, is proving problematic.

The National Association for Child Support Action (NACSA) says it hasreceived a number of complaints from non-resident parents concernedafter being contacted by private firms to collect Child Support Agencydebts that were either non-existent or inaccurate.

In two of the cases, which have happened across the UK, sums of 15,000 and 20,000 were being asked for.

NACSA chairwoman Michelle Counley said: "In only one of the cases doesthe father concede he owes money and even then the figure is way toohigh.

"Can you imagine what it must be like to get a demand for 20,000from a private debt firm? It adds further pressure to an alreadydifficult situation."
